BETA Engine

Tim Cadbury

Because of the refrigerator I have a 65 amp alternator and I found that constant belt slip created black belt dust all over the engine compartment. For less than £100 Beta supply 3 replacement pulleys and a flat ribbed belt.Easy to fit and no more belt slip or black dust everywhere.

The rubber pipe taking sea water from the engine to the anti syphoning device burst at the engine fitting, due mainly to the formulation of scale and an almost right angle bend in the pipe. The scale appeared to be similar to the scale that usually clogs sea water heads.

i thought id tell about my beta engine problems.i had difficultyfrom when i bought impulse 11 starting from cold but various engineers  said everything was ok eventually the engine was stipped and a cracked pisto n found due they say to ingress of water. i was perplexed by this until i was told about a poor launch stern first that forced water up the exhaust into the engine.new pistons and it starts immediately

Water ingress has led to another problem on Hecate - the other day I put the engine into gear, cast off from the pontoon only to find that the engine was not in gear at all and we were drifting.  The gear lever then would not move, and the engineer found that rainwater had got in and rusted the wires leading from the gear lever inside the locker and in the engine.  He has WD40'd it all and will do a thorough job in a month or so, and the lever will move ok for the moment, but it could stiffen up at any time.

When Hecate was launched after her winter ashore, the engineer who looks after the Beta advised me to make sure that the engine seacock was always closed when launching, even if the engine had to be run briefly immediately she came off the launcher to avoid just this problem.

Fuel

Tim Cadbury

Some years ago when marine diesel owners were concerned about black sludge comtamination I fitted a QL decontaminator and as it was marketed by Volvo I thought that it must have been tried and tested. It fits simply in the fuel line and consists of two magnets over which the fuel flows, breaking up these nasty lumps which seem to like blocking up everything. It is probably an act of faith rather like fitting a rope cutter!!!

Any owner who may be concerned about battery conservation may be interestes in fitting a Battman which measures voltage amps and particularly amp hours remaining.

The engine hour counter in the rev counter(Beta panel 2B I think).

Late last year it went blank (its a LCD). A marine engineer friend said that this is a common problem with the VDO meters and is solved by removing the panel and leaving it in the airing cupboard for a week. Also, even though the display is blank, it has been counting the hours. I took copious notes of which wires went where (they are simple enough to remove but there are a lot of them), put the panel in the airing cupboard (with the homebrew) and sure enough the problem was solved when I re-fitted the panel.
